Lithuania has closed its border with Belarus following âconstant violationsâ of its airspace, the countryâs foreign ministry announced Monday, at a time when European nations are on high alert for intrusions into their skies.
âDozens of helium balloonsâ have entered Lithuaniaâs airspace from Belarus over recent days, according to Inga RuginienÄ, the countryâs prime minister.
âAutocrats are once again testing the resilience of (the European Union) and NATO against hybrid threats,â she said Monday in a post on X, calling for a âunited, resolute responseâ against the airspace violations.
At a press conference, RuginienÄ said that her countryâs armed forces would take âall necessary measuresâ to shoot down balloons, Reuters reported.
âIn this way, we are again sending a signal that we are ready â and we are ready to take even the most severe actions when our airspace is violated,â she said.
